“Your Small Business Website Is Your 24 Hour A Day, 7 Day A Week Marketing Machine”
FACT: In 2009 82% of people searching for products and services in their local area used the internet. (Did the yellow pages ad rep. give you that little tidbit of information? Probably not.)
The consumer has changed. How they seek out information and people to work with has drastically changed over the past few years.
An effective website has become as important if not more important than a telephone number for your business. Notice we said ‘effective’ website. Anyone can put up a website. But:
- Is the website being found by the search engines?
- Is it properly developed to target the keyword terms YOUR potential customers use to find your product or service on the web?
- Has it been optimized to convert people to take action and call, email or visit your business? (This is a biggie! Studies show you have less than THREE SECONDS to grab a person’s attention on the web. THE PROBLEM: Most designers like to create a visually appealing and pretty site, which only distracts your customer and they end up clicking away.)
Here Are 3 Quick Small Business Web Design Tips
-
Use no more than 3 colors and 2 fonts with your design. Anything more and it’s distracting to the eye. More than 2 fonts is just plain ugly. Stick to fonts that are proven to be easy on the eye – Verdana, Tahoma, Arial, and Georgia. (We know it makes us sound nerdy… but they’re proven to convert better than anything else.)
- Have your most important content near the top and left hand side of your page. (On the right is a picture of a special software we use to track the mouse movement of people viewing clients websites. Here you can see the web-surfers are reading the headline at the top and moving their eye over to the image on the right.)
- Try and have only ONE action per page. What do we mean? When a person gets to your website make sure it’s easy for them to know what you want them to do. Should they watch a video? Than draw attention to it… Should they subscribe to your newsletter? Than give them a great bribe.
“So How Much Should A Good Website Design Cost?”
We here at TrafficBakery.com are always amazed to hear that hard-working small business owners are being charged over $5,000-$10,000 for a simple web site. No wonder so many small business owners don’t have websites or have ones designed by their cousin or their Aunt Kathi’s nephew. Which probably explains why Google isn’t finding it.
Something else to keep in mind… web designers are NOT marketers. And, at the end of the day, your website is a marketing machine. It’s not built to win awards for being pretty – it’s built to bring in revenue, put money in your pocket and build your customer base.
“Beautiful sites – are worthless sites.”
Full Disclosure!
We use templates.
That’s right. We’ve spent years testing, tracking and tweaking literally hundreds and thousands of websites. Because of our efforts we’ve developed proven website templates for small business owners. These layouts help you get your message delivered and more importantly – ACTED UPON, by your customers.
The reality is… the people charging 5-10k for websites use templates as well. But, they’ll never admit it.
We’re proud of it. It allows us to deliver a professional, revenue-generating website – fast. In fact, this site was built with one of our proven templates.
